If time sculpting were a genre that's where you would find this. If aliens made music it might sound like this. If you were an internal astronaut going in for an ecstatic depth charge you might take this. It's not that it's the most unique thing in the world, it's just that it doesn't sound like anything else. It's a bunch of irregular sounds captured from regular things and then shaped into songs. There's acoustic guitar, harmonica, melodica, cardboard tubes, loose leaf tea, springs, fm synthesis, ebo, metal exercise balls from Chinatown, analog tape decks and a host of other things in the tracks. But none of it sounds like what it is. It sounds like something from some other place made by people we haven't met yet.
Some day there's going to be an amusement park for sound. People are going to go there and get tickets to go on sound rides. They'll walk into one room or another and sit down or stand as they get hit with an audio adventure. It's not going to be like that ride that goes around in a circle real fast pumping out pop music. It's going to be more like jumping into an environment where sound waves and audio are affecting you the same way the rides at an amusement park do. Some rides might be easy going like the Pirates Of The Caribbean or It's A Small World and some might be more intense like the Matterhorn. You might scream, you might feel a little sick, you might have a great time.
Looking Skyward While On Fire is a collection of nine soundscapes. The recording was made on an old Soundcraft 2400 modular board and a 24 bit hard disk recorder. There's lots of nuance and detail in the mixes that have a way of emerging over time. It works well for making contact with the unknown in the middle of the night or playing through an ipod and headphones in the privacy of your own mind. Some of the soundscapes were used as atmosphere in Requiem For A Friend, an Antero Alli live performance ritual in Berkeley, California. And two of the tracks have been used as soundtracks for the shorts Babaji and Roof Of The World. The CD is available directly from Golden Flower Media.
